Stocking up on your weekly groceries is a little different in Bangalore- mostly because there is no one-stop-shop where you can get everything you need. There are a few places (physical stores or apps) that come close to providing all, but chances are they might not all be the best. While this might be a bit more time consuming than you’re used to, there are also other resources at your disposal (like dunzo, drivers and delivery).
BASICALLY, THESE ARE THE WAYS TO FILL YOUR KITCHEN:
1. GO TO THE SHOP + GET THINGS
We all know how to do this. This is the best way to look at all the options and pick out your own things. Some of the best grocery stores in Bangalore include Food Hall, Loyal World Market, Nilgiri’s, and Nature’s Basket. Most of these places will even arrange delivery as you’re paying so you don’t have to carry them home…(yes we also rolled our eyes at this until that one time where we just couldn’t be bothered to load and unload 60 diet cokes in the car) and some even offer full delivery service option which only works well if you know exactly what you want, i.e. the product name, brand and possibly package color. Here you risk the option of being told an item is, “out of stock” if someone on the other end doesn’t feel like searching for it. Happy Healthy Me and The Organic World are also great organic store options where you can go into the store and check things out or call/message or order online for delivery.
2. ORDER THINGS FROM AN APP/ONLINE + HAVE THEM DELIVERED
There are a few key apps which stock a huge range of items and best of all, deliver on the same or next day. Ordering is a breeze on these user-friendly apps such as Big Basket, Grofers, urDOORSTEP, and ZopNow which save your purchase history and can schedule repeat deliveries. Nature’s Basket now also have an app which makes it much easier to order. For those hard to find items, Amazon India is a great option although the delivery time could vary from 2 days to 3+ weeks. There are even specialized apps such as HealthyBuddha, Licious, Doodwhala, HipBar, and more which usually deliver between 1-3 days.

3. WHATSAPP/CALL THE STORE TO ORDER + ARRANGE PICKUP
Some smaller stores don’t offer their own delivery services. These are usually specialized stores or restaurants which have retail sections such as Bamburies, Whitefield Baking Company, Bengaluru Baking Company, Portland Steakhouse, Toscano, etc. A message or call with your order a few hours before will usually suffice depending on item availability. Then all you need to do is send someone to go pay for and pick them up – depending on how far away the place is from your house, this is a great time to send your driver with a cooler or organize a Dunzo (one-stop solution for all your delivery needs!) to do this.

4. GET A WEEKLY DELIVERY OF A CERTAIN PRODUCT
Many small retailers who may not even have a storefront or website sell this way, where ordering is usually done via a WhatsApp group. Sometimes they will set up groups by a community and take orders on that group to be delivered every week or just individually message you every week asking if you have any orders. For instance, for certain compounds, orders for cheese from Archanna’s Cheese Shop must be sent to the group before Wednesdays and are delivered every Friday while fruit and veggie orders arrive every Wednesday afternoon. Examples of items for these types of groups are bread, cheese, quiches and tarts, salads, fish, meats and sausages. To join one of these “communal group orders” your best bet is to ask a neighbor to add you.

It could very well be that your meats, fish, cheeses, bread, fruits and veggies, milk, dry items, and alcohol all come from different places. It sounds exhausting but it does ensure the highest quality of that particular item…
