HEALTHY EATING REVIEW #1: LOW CAL SALAD BOWL

TIME TO EAT HEALTHIER IN THE NEW YEAR

It’s the first week of the New Year, the time where we all try and set some goals for ourselves (at least for the month of January). Whether that is to spend less time on your phone, travel more, be a bit less impatient or get in shape, we could all afford to eat healthier. Whether we don’t have enough time or simply lack the willpower to do it, there are many easy and affordable options here in Bangalore which will help you kickstart a year of better eating habits. So The Vine is starting off January with a series of Healthy Eating Reviews. These companies all have a few things in common- healthy, convenient and yummy.

LOW CAL SALAD BOWL

Up first is a lovely company called Low Cal Salad Bowl based in North Bangalore. This is the perfect solution for those of us who know we should eat more salad, but are bored with the standard bowl of leaves with a few dices of feta and two halved cherry tomatoes on it. Arushya never repeats the same salad combo twice!

COMPANY NAME: Low Cal Salad Bowl

ABOUT THE COMPANY: Arushya started Low Cal Salad Bowl after wanting to spend more time with her daughter after school. She had also noticed that these days you just didn’t know what goes into restaurant food. How healthy were the sauces really? What hidden ingredients were not being listed on the menu? Where were the vegetables actually coming from and what was sprayed on them? She felt this was echoed by the people around her who were just not satisfied with the food quality they were experiencing. She wanted to create 100% healthy salad options which would be conveniently delivered to homes and offices to provide people with better options than having to go to a restaurant. So Low Cal Salads was born. Arushya grows her own produce (which is harvested every 2-3 days) at The Village Story to certify that everything is organic with no preservatives, colors or any other bad stuff. The chicken she uses is free of antibiotics and sourced from Fresh To Home. She makes every sauce herself (except soy) so you can rest assured of what goes into everything!

OUR WEEK OF FRESH HOMEMADE SALADS

DAY 1 MONDAY:

INGREDIENTS: Satay Chicken Cous Cous Bowl with beetroot, spring onions, peppers, corn salsa with loads of parsley and coriander, onions and lime. Couscous on the side, with bean sprouts. Fresh mint dressing. Nuts and raisins on the side.

Our salad arrived in the morning neatly packed with the nuts and raisins individually packed separately to avoid from getting soggy. Before our delivery, Arushya had shared the menu with us to ensure we didn’t have any dietary requirements or simply didn’t like a certain ingredient so she could note that for any future orders. While the 500 ml box may look small at first bite, by the end we realized we were more full than we imagined we would be! The ingredients all felt fresh and each bite was loaded with a punch of the fresh herbs. The chicken had a nice flavor and wasn’t dry.

DAY 3 WEDNESDAY:

INGREDIENTS: Chicken Stir Fry with bok choy, mushrooms, broccoli, snap peas & red pepper with garlic, soy, and sweet chili brown rice. Honey, garlic, and chili dressing on the side with roasted cashews.

Our next salad bowl of the week arrived on time with two containers- one filled with brown rice and the other filled with the veggies, nuts, and sauces. Arushya had suggested that we heat up the sauce first before using it on the salad. The taste was flavorful yet light with just the right amount of spice. There was a nice crunch from the snap peas and the broccoli. The chicken was surprisingly tender. We had this for dinner and weren’t sure that it would be enough at first but after we were done we found that we weren’t really hungry for anything else which was great. We enjoyed this salad so much that we almost forgot that it was healthy!

DAY 5 FRIDAY:

INGREDIENTS: Sesame and butter dry Chicken Stir Fry. A fresh salad of cranberries, apples, rocket leaves with millet noodles made with sesame, Napa cabbage, garlic, and basil. Basil dressing and caramelized walnuts.

Our last fresh salad of the week was very tasty! The salad was small and fairly simple but pleasant and felt healthy. We loved the caramelized walnuts and the sauce had a yummy sweet taste which went well with the apples, caramelized walnuts and dried cranberries in the salad. The millet noodles didn’t taste greasy which was nice as well.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Overall, Low Cal Salad Bowls are straightforward and simple yet taste good and we know that everything in there is lovingly made with good ingredients that are homegrown, organic, preservative-free, antibiotic-free, and hormone-free. We love that the ingredients are ever-changing so we wouldn’t get bored after the third salad. The customizable aspect is great for those of us with dietary restrictions and that are just picky as well (this tester is guilty of that!). While the portion sizes are a bit small, if you truly are looking to lose weight, these would be a great way to start. Alternatively, you could add these to your meals as a healthy lunch three times a week and are a great thing for those of you who work in an office (or your partners) to bring to work to avoid the canteen or local restaurants nearby. The convenience factor of delivery straight to your door makes this a very easy option- not to mention healthy and yummy!
