CASUAL VEGETARIAN BRUNCHES IN SOUTH BANGALORE

Whether you are new to Bangalore or visiting the city after a while, you are bound to come across a new eatery or an irresistible Instagrammable cafe every now and then. But good interiors don’t always mean equally good food. And if you are looking for some interesting vegetarian brekkies in the city, then it could take you a while! Luckily for you, I’ve been on a year-long quest to find great brunch spots in South Bangalore where I can spend my weekends feeling happy and full. For me, a great brunch place should have the following:

  • Soothing ambiance

  • Sumptuous food

  • Good portions – I like my breakfast plate to be full!

  • A refreshing cup of brewed tea or coffee that is not watered down!

  • Someplace where I won’t have to rush to finish my meal before the servers passively ask me to vacate the table!

If this is your idea of a good brunch spot too, then you will surely enjoy these places:

TERRABITES

TYPE OF FOOD: Continental, fusion Indian food

Almost a year old, this cafe located in the lanes of Sector 4 boasts of spacious interiors, minimalistic decor and soulful food. Do try The Big TerraBite Veg Breakfast, which includes hearty portions of proteins and a refreshing tall glass of fresh juice. I would also recommend their pancakes and coffee; you will not want to leave this place for a long time! They also have some great options for non-vegetarians, like their recently added Mustard Basa fish. Best of all, their bakery products are always freshly baked so make sure you try out their flourless chocolate cake. After all, who counts calories at brunch!

SECTOR 7 CAFE

TYPE OF FOOD: Continental food

HSR is sprawling with new eateries almost every week, so the fact that this cafe has held its spot for more than 2 years speaks a lot about the food it serves. Personally, this is my go-to spot anytime I’m in HSR because of its simple looks and gorgeous food. My favourite is the Life of Pi that comes with a home-brewed hot ginger tea (you can swap it for coffee or any fresh juice too) and seasonal fruit. They also have some great egg options if you’d like to try some. If you are a non-vegetarian you can also check out their Special Baked Fish; it is a guaranteed crowd pleaser!

Do note that the cafe is closed on Mondays.

DYU ART CAFE

TYPE OF FOOD: Continental food

A traditional home-turned-cafe, DYU Art lives up to its name as soon as you enter in. A gallery featuring local artists, terraces that take you back in time, and locally brewed filter coffee that could put big outlets to shame, you will not regret spending your afternoon here. The food is cooked to perfection, but it takes some time to be served so do carry a pinch of patience with you. The coffee is bound to wake you up but the ambience will make you stay here for hours. If you are looking for a brunch spot to be by yourself, this is the place to be. And do not order just a salad; treat yourself with the English Breakfast and end the brunch with one of their cakes.

Note that this place gets filled up quickly on weekends and they may not take reservations on Sundays so try coming here by 10-10:30 AM.

VIA MILANO

TYPE OF FOOD: Italian food

If your idea of brunch replaces coffee with cold wine, then try visiting Via Milano. The staff knows their Vino for sure and will be happy to recommend the right kind of drink if you are looking to try out something new. The food is very Italian; right from their antipasti to their pasta, every dish is cooked to perfection. Try out their pizzas if you are in a group or Gnocchi de Barbabietola if you are in the mood for something different. This place doesn’t have your regular breakfast options but the view makes it ideal for an elegant brunch away from the bustling city.

HERE & NOW

TYPE OF FOOD: All-day breakfasts

Do you know what is better than a morning breakfast? All-day breakfasts! Here & Now is another home-turned-cafe in HSR that offers big Continental dishes accompanied with fresh bread, juices and smooth coffees throughout the day. It is a famous cafe in the locality and is rightly so; Here & Now is an ideal place to spend your lazy Saturdays at. The smaller rooms are converted into recreational spaces with pool tables and books that you can pick and read while you sip on your ginger tea. Or if you are famished and need something meaty then try out their burgers-from chicken to pork they have it all. Whatever you try, do not miss their waffles menu!

The space opens up from 9 am and gets quickly filled on Sundays by 11 AM, so plan your weekend brunch here in advance. They are closed on Tuesdays.
